On Monday, Year 1 had a fantastic day out at St Mary’s lighthouse.

When we arrived, the tide was out so we were able to get straight across to the island on foot. Our first job was to climb 137 very steep stairs to reach the very top. Everyone was so brave and had a go even though they were feeling a bit nervous. After reaching the top, we had an amazing view out to sea and even spotted 18 seals resting on the rocks behind the lighthouse. At the top, we found out about the daily routines of a lighthouse keeper, how the light worked and even how to clean the windows!

After the big climb we tried on some lighthouse keeper outfits and found out about the history of St Mary’s.

In the afternoon we went outside on the rocks rock climbing. We found all sorts of creatures including crabs, fish, limpets, anemones and even a mini starfish. Some people were extremely brave and had a go at holding some of the creatures.

We had an amazing day and would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Adkin and Mrs Ord for volunteering their help for the day.
