The aim of our ‘Friday Write’ is to grow our children into independent and expert writers and foster an enjoyment of writing whilst boosting children’s confidence. We want children of all abilities to feel successful when they write and be proud of the work they produce.
What does the ‘Friday Write’ involve?
The main part of the session is an extended period of independent writing. However, there's more to the approach than just writing.
- Each Friday, children are given a homework ‘talk task’ which is to talk to the family members at home about the picture stimulus going to be used the following week. They should discuss what they're going to write about and mentally prepare so that they're ready to share ideas and begin writing.
- On the day of the ‘Friday Write’, teachers will have the image on display and spend quality time discussing the children’s ideas, interpretations, vocabulary and recap on the basic punctuation skills required.
- Children then begin their independent writing session.
- At the end of the session (30 minutes), the class teacher selects one piece of writing to share with the rest of the school during our ‘Friday Write’ assembly. The headteachers read aloud the chosen writing from each class alongside the child and celebrate the vocabulary and creativity of the piece.
What are the benefits of the ‘Friday Write’?
- Allows grammar and punctuation teaching to be integrated into a fun and enjoyable learning session
- Gives children the opportunity to be creative and show off their skills
- Focuses on key elements of the national curriculum
- Inspires confidence in children allowing them to become more competent writers
